Amongst a number of targeted faculty hires, we are inviting applications from high-caliber candidates to build an innovative program that will bring new insights, solutions and focus to the area of coastal and marine protection, restoration and enhancement.


The coastal and marine environments of the Middle East are biodiversity hotspots, with the Red Sea in particular home to resilient ecosystems that function at the thresholds of tolerances observed elsewhere. Recognizing the inherent natural value of these environments, efforts that better understand and enhance their viability in the face of anticipated climate changes are required. KAUSTs unique setting on the shores of the Red Sea offer the potential to establish a “natural laboratory” that can serve the analysis, protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems around the world, particularly as its present-day conditions mirror future extreme conditions in other seas.


KAUST is seeking creative and ambitious faculty who can bridge multidisciplinary fields to address the diversity of issues that threaten the stability and security of coastal and marine ecosystems and channel this knowledge into tractable solutions. Potential areas of focus might include, but are not limited to: modeling and analysis of coastal and marine ecosystems; development of strategies for coastal and marine protection and restoration; conservation analysis and assessment; blue carbon and natural capital accounting; and habitat restoration.

Qualifications


Candidates should have a clear vision that prioritizes the protection, restoration and enhancement of the region’s precious marine ecosystems, with a focus on delivering scalable and implementable solutions. Experience in the design or application of ecosystem assessment and analysis tools, prior experience in restoration projects, or a combination of modeling and experimental experience will be viewed favorably. Candidates applying for a position at the Assistant Professor level should illustrate their potential for high-impact research. Candidates applying for Associate and Full Professor positions should possess a distinguished track record in research and a strong commitment to service and teaching at the graduate level.

The Division of Science at NYU Abu Dhabi invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track, open-rank faculty position jointly within its Physics and Chemistry Programs in the area of soft matter. PhD in Physics Scholarship at NSSTC

Job Description


The National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) invites applications from enthusiastic, ambitious, and hard-working Emirati nationals for a graduate scholarship leading to a PhD in Physics, to start in Spring or Fall 2021. Supervision of the PhD thesis will be done jointly between NSSTC and the Department of Physics. Applications for entry in Spring 2021 must be submitted by 15 November 2020. For entry in Fall 2021, applications must be submitted by 30 November 2020, and we will look favourably on applicants willing to join NSSTC as a Research Assistant from January 2021, to bridge the gap until the start of the PhD program. The PhD project is linked to the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), due to arrive at Mars in early 2021. The area of study will be "Assimilation of EMM-Hope and Mars lander observations into high-resolution mesoscale and local models". This project would suit a theoretical/computational person with an interest in exploring Mars' atmosphere using state-of-the-art numerical methods and the most recent observations. There are very few UAE nationals qualified to PhD level in planetary science, and with the imminent arrival of EMM at Mars, NSSTC is very keen to recruit Emirati nationals as PhD students in this area. In this project, we will investigate Mars' lower atmosphere and boundary layer by assimilating data from EMM's thermal infrared instrument EMIRS and from other landers and rovers into high-resolution local simulations created using the LMD Mars Mesoscale/Microscale Model. Assimilating data into such models will allow us to investigate many poorly-understood atmospheric phenomena. Of particular interest is the region to the south and west of Elysium Mons, where the landing sites for Curiosity, Insight, and Perseverance are located. The student will join the EMM science team and work alongside Emirati and international scientists to achieve the project goals. The Emirates Nuclear Technology Center at Khalifa University is searching for a post-doctoral Research Associate (RA) to participate in a project conducting a safety analysis of design basis accident and design extension condition against experimental data from OECD-ATLAS project. This project is taking a thermal hydraulic analysis and a computational approach via lump code such as RELAP5/TRACE and CFD code such as ANSYS/STAR-CCM+ as well as a thermal-hydraulic experiment. Particular emphasis is for candidates with a background and interest in generating an input of safety analysis code and developing safety analysis code by implementing new models with the V&V procedure and conducting T-H experiments via designing and building test rig and measuring/analyzing data.


This is a two-year appointment (can be expended up to five years) at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The area of study will be "Building and analysing comprehensive Mars dust storm databases from 1 Martian Year of EMM observations". This project would suit a person with pronounced interest and a study background in remote sensing (both satellite imagery and quantitative data) and atmospheric and planetary science. With the imminent arrival of EMM at Mars, NSSTC is very keen to recruit Emirati nationals as PhD students in this area. The task of this PhD project is to build a dust storm database spanning at least 1 Martian Year (1 Martian Year is ca. 1.9 Earth Years) based on EMM. The database construction will start with the beginning of the EMM Science phase, scheduled for early-to-mid 2021. The basis of this database will be images by the EMM instrument EXI (Emirates Exploration Imager). The combination with quantitative data on the dust optical depth, atmospheric temperature, etc. from the EMM instruments EXI and EMIRS (Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer) is possible. A particular challenge is the fact that EMM will map dust storms each few hours or, equivalently, several times per day. This implies that the database has to be updated on a sub-daily basis. Likewise, this makes the database unique from existing dust storm databases. An integral part will be the subsequent statistical/mathematical analysis of dust storm characteristics such as source region, storm track and size, timing and duration, etc. The student will join the EMM science team and work alongside Emirati and international scientists to achieve the project goals. The Division of Science at NYU Abu Dhabi invites applications for tenured or tenure-track, open-rank faculty positions within its Physics Program. Faculty in the Program in Physics contribute to the multidisciplinary research at NYU Abu Dhabi, and are currently working with faculty from other programs in areas that include neuroscience, drug discovery and delivery, and computer modeling. Candidates are expected to be outstanding scholars with exceptional productivity in their fields, and to act as inspirational teachers and mentors to undergraduate and graduate students.


Faculty have access to state-of-the-art core technology platforms that include (1) a fully equipped microscopy facility that houses confocal and stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolution microscopes, scanning and transmission electron and atomic force microscopes, and combined confocal Raman atomic force resolution and scanning near-field optical microscopy (AFM SNOM); (2) protein expression and purification facilities; (3) advanced DNA sequencing facilities; (4) equipment for spectroscopic, thermal and chemical analysis, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometers; (5) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); and (6) high-performance computing facilities with more than 8,000 computing cores and a peak performance of 70 TFLOPS.
