Job Description


The Shubeita laboratory in the program of physics within the Division of Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research associate to work on understanding mechanisms that regulate molecular motor-based axonal transport.


The successful applicant will drive a project aimed at understanding the modes of regulation of bidirectional transport along the axonal microtubules using a combination of cell biological and biophysical approaches. The successful applicant will push the frontier of our understanding of cargo-specific determinants of regulation as well as regulation of molecular motor function via microtubule-associated proteins. The candidate will use state-of-the art facilities and work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students with training in physics, biology, and chemistry.


Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. The successful applicant is required to have experience studying intracellular transport both in the axonal context and in vitro, hands-on experience using optical tweezers, mammalian cell culture, high resolution imaging, and surface chemistry.

As well as having expert knowledge and experience relevant to the areas of responsibility, all technical support staff are expected to adopt a proactive role in keeping up-to-date with new developments as appropriate to their role.  In addition, you will also be expected to understand the need to put students first and to be proactive in improving the support that students receive, which may include working with students in other departments. 


The Person 

You will have either Vocational or equivalent qualification in your area of expertise, in addition, our Senior Technician roles, will also have a relevant professional qualification in one of the following areas: 


Design

Skilled in various aspects of Engineering design with expertise in CAD/CAM software and use/trouble shooting 3D printers.

Mechanical Engineering: machining, fabrication and welding

Hands-on skills in all mechanical engineering equipment, as well as the ability to deploy a wide range of skills and knowledge to deal with student projects and assessments.

Electronics  

Able to simulate and test electronics circuits, assemble and trouble shoot circuits.

Automation software and coding using various programming techniques.

Robotics and mechatronics integration and testing with additive manufacturing techniques.


The successful candidate will have previous experience of providing face to face student interaction in a higher education context, experience of using a wide variety of specialist equipment relevant to your area of expertise, working in a team and have the ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks and goals. You will also have knowledge of Health and Safety requirements pertaining to teaching environments.


Candidate is also expected to have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
