Applications for the award are accepted according to the following conditions:


The applicant must be a Kuwaiti citizen.

To be a holder of a doctorate degree, and for the applicant to have at least 8 scientific papers published in refereed scientific journals that he published after obtaining his doctorate degree.

For applicants in the field of medical and paramedical sciences, an associate's degree is considered equivalent to a doctorate in other disciplines.

The age of the applicant should not be more than 45 years.

The submitted scientific production should include the following: Research published or accepted for publication in refereed scientific journals Research published in proceedings of scientific conferences written, translated or edited books or authorship of one or more chapters in a book Articles, studies, scientific reports and patents. Resulting from master's and doctoral theses in evaluating the candidate's scientific production.

The applicant’s scientific production follows the standards and principles of academic research integrity.

PhD Scholarship Related to Mars Science at NSSTC

Job Description

The National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) invites applications from enthusiastic, ambitious, and hard-working Emirati nationals for a graduate scholarship leading to a PhD related to Mars Science, to start in Spring or Fall 2022. Supervision of the PhD thesis will be done jointly between NSSTC and a partnering University Department (Geography, Geology, Physics, etc.). Applications for entry in Spring 2022 must be submitted as soon as possible. For entry in Fall 2021, applications must be submitted by 30 November 2021, and we will look favourably on applicants willing to join NSSTC as a Research Assistant from January 2022, to bridge the gap until the start of the PhD program. The PhD project is linked to the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), which arrived at Mars in early 2021. The area of study will be "Building and analysing comprehensive Mars dust storm databases from 1 Martian Year of EMM observations". This project would suit a person with pronounced interest and a study background in remote sensing (both satellite imagery and quantitative data) and atmospheric and planetary science. With the imminent arrival of EMM at Mars, NSSTC is very keen to recruit Emirati nationals as PhD students in this area. The task of this PhD project is to build a dust storm database spanning at least 1 Martian Year (1 Martian Year is ca. 1.9 Earth Years) based on EMM. The database construction will start with the beginning of the EMM Science phase, scheduled for early-to-mid 2021. The basis of this database will be images by the EMM instrument EXI (Emirates Exploration Imager). The combination with quantitative data on the dust optical depth, atmospheric temperature, etc. from the EMM instruments EXI and EMIRS (Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer) is possible. A particular challenge is the fact that EMM will map dust storms each few hours or, equivalently, several times per day. This implies that the database has to be updated on a sub-daily basis. Likewise, this makes the database unique from existing dust storm databases. An integral part will be the subsequent statistical/mathematical analysis of dust storm characteristics such as source region, storm track and size, timing and duration, etc. The student will join the EMM science team and work alongside Emirati and international scientists to achieve the project goals. Who can apply?

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orientin Berlin, Germany, is inviting applications for the Oman Research Grant, sponsored by the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science. The

Grant comprises funding for a research stay in Berlin of up to 3 months in 2022 at ZMO, as well

as travel costs to Berlin, for the successful candidate. We are seeking to attract an outstanding

postdoctoral scholar who is engaged in projects in research fields related to Omani Studies.

ZMO expects all fellows to participate in the centre’s academic life and to give one presentation on their project. The awarded fellow is to acknowledge the research grant achievements

and publications as “Funded by The Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science” and

to provide the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science with five copies of publications funded by the grant.

The grant will be worth 2500 Euros per month, in addition to the costs of travel of up to 500

Euros.

Applicants are invited to consult the ZMO website before submitting their proposals in order to

better gauge the context in which they intend to work. We are happy to answer questions prior

to the application.

The review of applications by the Selection Committee (comprising ZMO researchers and one

employee of the Omani Embassy as an observer) will be finalised by the end of September.
