The Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a research technician to help in analyzing the biochemistry of the Arabian/Persian Gulf waters. The position will involve collecting, cataloging, storing and processing seawater samples, using various flow cytometry-based methods to characterize phytoplankton and other microbial communities from the Arabian/Persian Gulf and culturing phytoplankton species.


The successful applicant will support a diverse team of faculty, postdoctoral scientists, engineers and students in establishing a network of environmental monitoring stations across the UAE shoreline and systematically collecting and analyzing environmental samples from these stations to better understand the Arabian/Persian Gulf environment and its response to climate change. ACCESS is comprised of a diverse group of scientists studying oceanography, marine biology, atmospheric and ocean modeling, robotics and artificial intelligence. The center has access to state-of-the-art field and laboratory equipment and a research vessel. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate and undergraduate students.


Applicants must have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in marine science, biology or a related field. Experience with flow cytometry is a must. All candidates MUST provide a description of their flow cytometry experience in the first paragraph of their cover letter; applicants without this inclusion will not be considered. Experience with FlowCam, phytoplankton culturing, and/or certification for SCUBA diving are desirable. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and be part of a team are essential.

Post-Doctoral Associate in the Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences

Description


New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and invites applications for a Post-doctoral Associate to support the development of national coral reef monitoring network for the Emirates and to develop research on processes driving changes in reef communities and potential intervention measures to enhance their conservation. NYUAD is located on the shores of the Persian/Arabian Gulf, where marine fauna experience extreme annual sea temperatures (summer >35 °C, winter <20 °C), high salinity (44 PSU) and moderately high turbidity, making it an interesting natural laboratory for exploring questions around organismal responses to extreme and variable environmental conditions. In addition, NYUAD is only a 3-hour drive from the biogeographically connected Sea of Oman (northern Indian Ocean) where more benign environmental conditions offer an unparalleled opportunity for comparative studies, particularly those related to climate change.


The position will be under the supervision of Prof. John Burt, head of the NYUAD Marine Biology Lab. The candidate will be hired within the newly established Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS), an interdisciplinary research center focused on regional environmental change, where Burt is co-PI. The candidate will work closely with other NYUAD researchers under Burt’s supervision within ACCESS, the Marine Biology Laboratory, the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) and the Water Research Center (WRC). A basal component of the role will be to establish a cohesive national coral reef monitoring network (benthic, with fishes ideally incorporated) which builds on existing and historic monitoring programs across the UAE, including incorporation of environmental data. However, the candidate is expected to use this basal monitoring to develop focused research on the patterns/processes underpinning reef community change and means by which we can enhance reef conservation going forward.


The position will begin on 1 Sept. 2022 and will extend for two to three years (depending on the candidate’s preference), with renewal possible depending on performance and budgets. Candidates must have a PhD in biology, marine biology or a related field completed by June 2022 and must be certified SCUBA divers with at least 50 dives experience. Experience in establishing coral reef survey and/or monitoring programs is considered crucial experience, ideally where divergent organisms have been included (corals, fishes, etc) [note: diversity in the UAE is low relative to many regions, permitting rapid training to genus/species]. Experience with multiple survey methods is an advantage. The candidate must be proficient with univariate and multivariate analyses of biological/environmental data, ideally in R. Experience with first-author publishing is required, particularly where monitoring data have been used to address impactful ecological questions. Experience with reef mapping, photogrammy/photomosaics, GIS, hyperspectral analyses, and related skills would be considered advantageous but is not required. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the capacity to build beyond simple monitoring to using well-designed field, aquarium and/or lab-based studies to explore processes shaping trajectories (e.g. diseases, demographics, nutrients, etc) that result in impactful publications.


Salary will be contingent on experience and the position comes with a very attractive salary and benefits package including a housing allowance, annual flights, and tuition for children (if relevant), and medical insurance. Salary and benefits are entirely tax free in the UAE.

As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in Marine Science, the Marine Science Program (MarS) in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research, higher education and innovations in the field of Marine Biogeochemistry. Applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) are invited from highly competitive candidates eager to pursue innovative research addressing fundamental questions and developing cutting–edge technologies for application in marine systems.


We are especially interested in applications from high-caliber scientists with expertise in Biogeochemistry and biogeochemical cycles in the ocean water column and sediments with particular reference to the coastal and pelagic environments including shallow and deep extreme environments. Successful candidate is expected to develop top-notch research programs on the biogeochemistry of the Red Sea ecosystems including but not limited to coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests salt marshes (sabkah) and coastal lagoons also in relation to blue carbon sequestration; additional ecosystems are the Red Sea water column and the extreme ecosystems of the Red Sea, such as stromatolites, brine pools and hydrocarbon vents. The selected candidate is  expected to build a strong teaching program in the Marine Science Program and to establish inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations within the Marine Science Program, the BESE Division and across Divisions, Research Centers and Initiatives at KAUST.


Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Biological Science, or related fields, as well as a strong publication record in the top-tier venues of their respective areas. Preference will be given to candidates who can take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea that may serve as a “natural laboratory” for marine biogeochemistry studies in extreme seas, as its present-day conditions (with elevated temperature, salinity and oligotrophy) mirror future conditions in other seas under anticipated climate change scenarios.

It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.

Preference will be given to candidates with education from and/or previous service in pre-eminent institutions of higher education.   

Duties:


Teaching, research and administration. Research duties include engagement in research activities within the field of geomorphology and remote sensing in general with applications to UAE in particular, disseminating research in international journals, and collaboration across disciplines.

Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. Applicants must have documented teaching experience and should be able to teach courses in geomorphology, and related topics such as Geoinformatics (GIS and remote sensing) at the postgraduate and undergraduate educational programs in the new Earth & Planetary Sciences degree in the department as well as contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development. Administration duties include membership in committees in the department and the college.

Geomorphology and Remote sensing (Reference code: ES_GMORPH_21)


Description of subject area of the employment: The successful candidate will join the Department of Earth Sciences, which includes research in Geophysics, Paleontology, Petrology, Planetary Geology, Sedimentology, and Structural Geology. The research in Geomorphology and Remote sensing will be focused on landscape dynamics with a focus on the UAE. We are particularly encouraging applicants with solid background in remote sensing and geomorphology with expertise in data collection and observations in the field, documented skills in remote sensing and GIS techniques. Expertise in planetary remote sensing is an advantage.


Qualifications


The position is open for Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor ranks.

Assistant Professor - Minimum of 3 years experience relevant to the position and proven research potential.

Associate Professor -Minimum of 8 years teaching experience or postgraduate research experience, out of which at least 5 years should be at the level of Assistant Professor.

Professor -Minimum of 10 years teaching and postgraduate research experience, out of which at least 5 years should be at the level of Associate Professor and have demonstrated high standards in teaching, advising, and research.

Qualifications and experience:


• PhD in Geomorphology/Remote sensing or related discipline or have the corresponding research competence, or some other related professional expertise. Expertise in planetary applications is an advantage.

• Research expertise and teaching expertise. International reputation demonstrated by a significant publication record in the relevant field is required. At least 2 years of teaching experience in a university environment, including supervision of graduate and PhD students. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.

Preference will be given to candidates with education from and/or previous service in pre-eminent institutions of higher education.   

Duties:


Teaching, research and administration. Research duties include engagement in research activities within the field of geomorphology and remote sensing in general with applications to UAE in particular, disseminating research in international journals, and collaboration across disciplines.

Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. Applicants must have documented teaching experience and should be able to teach courses in geomorphology, and related topics such as Geoinformatics (GIS and remote sensing) at the postgraduate and undergraduate educational programs in the new Earth & Planetary Sciences degree in the department as well as contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development. Administration duties include membership in committees in the department and the college.

Follow developments within the subject area and the development of society in general that is important for the work at the university.

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise. In addition to academic merits, research merits from other activities, including technology development, may also be taken into account including research merits obtained outside the academy, which includes for example technology development, innovation ability and experience in industry. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in spatial analysis, assimilation of empirical data and modelling of the physical processes in landscape dynamics.

As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in marine science, the Marine Science Program (MarS) in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research, higher education and innovations in the field of Big Data Modelling and Integration. Applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) are invited from highly competitive candidates eager to pursue innovative research addressing fundamental questions and developing cutting–edge technologies for application in marine systems.


We are especially interested in applications from high-caliber scientists who take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea and have expertise in development of modelling and integration framework for biological, physical and chemical big data for smart ocean; establishing methods for modelling organismal and systemic networks in the marine whole ecosystem, from microbiomes to large animals and megafauna, and their integration with marine environmental big data.
