Post Doctoral Fellow, Geochemistry/Radiochemistry

Job Purpose

To provide high quality research support and undertake internationally competitive research aimed at publication thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University.

Since the Postdoctoral, experience is transitional to becoming an independent researcher or faculty member, the Postdoctoral tries their best to acquire the varied skills necessary to advance their career with guidance from the advisor. These skills include, but are not limited to, the ability to present research plans and findings in a convincing style, both in oral and written modes of communication, the ability to understand research group management and supervision of others, the ability to establish contacts and network with colleagues pursuing a similar research agenda, the ability to organize and teach a class or a course if more inclined towards a teaching career.

 Key Roles & Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

Perform laboratory and field experiments, including integral and separate-effect experiments, to describe retention/transport of radionuclides in the surface and transfer factors of radionuclides in representative plants.

Obtain experimental parameters describing the retention/migration of radionuclides in the environment.

Study the sorption equilibriums, rock characterization, waters characterization, soils characterization, soil/plant Interaction, and the transfer properties of radionuclides of interests in an area of interest.

Assess radionuclide transport in a range of surface water and shallow groundwater systems at tracing the migration of radionuclides in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Assist transport modeling in assessments of the radiological impact of a geological repository for radioactive wastes.

Analyze model outputs together with the experimental data, available from literature, to generate scientific results and science-based recommendations.

To independently undertake research in the relevant discipline area using the appropriate methods and/or techniques.

To produce research reports and publications as required by the funding body and for dissemination to the wider academic community.

To collaborate with research colleagues and support staff internally as appropriate to the actively.

Develop appropriate external contacts and networks relevant to the project and to future funding opportunities.

To attend, contribute, and where necessary lead relevant meetings.

To undertake any other duties relevant to the research group activities.

Operational Responsibilities

In this project, experiments will be performed to understand the environmental impact of radionuclides produced by fission and neutron capture reactions occurring in nuclear reactors. The environmental impact, an important aspect of the safety case demonstration, involves the radionuclides transfer (surface, underground) in the near- and the far-field and their attempt of the human being via the food chain and drinking water. Also, understanding radionuclides fate in the environment is valuable to the field of radioactive waste management, another critical matter of the success of a nuclear energy program. The radioactive waste disposal implies the interactions of radionuclides and geosphere under surface (mid- and low-level short life waste disposal) and deep geological conditions (e.g. high-level long life waste disposal). The objectives of the project are to obtain experimental parameters describing the retention/migration of radionuclides in the environment that ultimately will be used for modelling.

Assistant / Associate / Full Professor in Environmental / Analytical Chemistry

Description

As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in environmental science and engineering, the Environmental Science and Engineering (EnSE) Program in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research in the field of environmental/analytical chemistry. The EnSE program has established research strength in several areas to address the challenges of the 21st century. We educate and train students to work on many of the world’s most pressing challenges related to sustainability and the environment, focusing on the intersection of water, energy and food nexus, and sustainable processes. The Middle East is experiencing rapid population and economic growth, along with demand for water resources. The water-scarce region is already faced with depleting water resources and tapping into non-conventional water resources, which will be crucial to propel sustainable growth. Recognizing the complexity of non-conventional water resources, we are seeking applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) from outstanding candidates who are developing methods to better identify and quantify emerging chemical contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals, personal care products, micro-plastics, Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), and to determine their fate and environmental behaviour, and health and biodiversity impacts. We are looking for candidates with strong analytical chemistry background to study emerging contaminants and their by-products in natural, engineered, or biological samples. The potential hire is expected to develop vigorous research programs that span across the fields of chemistry, chemical biology, and environmental science.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field, as well as a strong publication record in the top-tier journals of their respective fields. The successful candidate is expected to establish top-notch research activities that contribute to the EnSE program research mission to promote sustainability in water, energy, food, cities, infrastructure, and the environment.  The candidate is encouraged to establish multi-disciplinary collaborations within the BESE Division and across Divisions and Initiatives at KAUST. Education responsibilities include teaching approximately two courses per academic year at the graduate level and student mentorship and supervision. Successful candidate is also expected to provide professional service at the Program, Division and the University level.

The position will remain open until filled.

Professor of Coastal and Marine Protection, Restoration and Enhancement, Open Rank

Job Description

As part of a University-wide strategic focus on Climate and Livability, KAUST is seeking outstanding individuals to deliver impact driven research that will push the boundaries of what is known about our planet and advance the goals of this important initiative. Amongst a number of targeted faculty hires, we are inviting applications from high-caliber candidates to build an innovative program that will bring new insights, solutions and focus to the area of coastal and marine protection, restoration and enhancement.

The coastal and marine environments of the Middle East are biodiversity hotspots, with the Red Sea in particular home to resilient ecosystems that function at the thresholds of tolerances observed elsewhere. Recognizing the inherent natural value of these environments, efforts that better understand and enhance their viability in the face of anticipated climate changes are required. KAUSTs unique setting on the shores of the Red Sea offer the potential to establish a “natural laboratory” that can serve the analysis, protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems around the world, particularly as its present-day conditions mirror future extreme conditions in other seas.

KAUST is seeking creative and ambitious faculty who can bridge multidisciplinary fields to address the diversity of issues that threaten the stability and security of coastal and marine ecosystems and channel this knowledge into tractable solutions. Potential areas of focus might include, but are not limited to: modeling and analysis of coastal and marine ecosystems; development of strategies for coastal and marine protection and restoration; conservation analysis and assessment; blue carbon and natural capital accounting; and habitat restoration.

About KAUST

KAUST is an international, graduate research university dedicated to advancing science and technology through interdisciplinary research, education, and innovation. In Nature Index’s most recent Young Universities Rankings (2019), KAUST was #1 for institutions under 20 years of age and #6 for those under 50.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a clear vision that prioritizes the protection, restoration and enhancement of the region’s precious marine ecosystems, with a focus on delivering scalable and implementable solutions. Experience in the design or application of ecosystem assessment and analysis tools, prior experience in restoration projects, or a combination of modeling and experimental experience will be viewed favorably. Candidates applying for a position at the Assistant Professor level should illustrate their potential for high-impact research. Candidates applying for Associate and Full Professor positions should possess a distinguished track record in research and a strong commitment to service and teaching at the graduate level.

Application Instructions

Applications should include a cover letter, a CV that includes a list of publications, and a concise statement of research vision and plans (maximum 2 pages) and teaching interests (1 page). The names and contact details of at least three (and up to five) referees is also requested. While the position is open rank, there is a preference for junior candidates. Applications will be evaluated as soon as they are received, with the position remaining open until it is filled.

The successful candidate will have a primary affiliation with the Marine Science program in addition to affiliation with the world-renowned Red Sea Research Center, allowing them to take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea. Few, if any, other universities offer the same combination of access to diverse tropical marine habitats and world-class laboratory facilities.
