Description


As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in marine science, the Marine Science Program (MarS) in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research, higher education and innovations in the field of Big Data Modelling and Integration. Applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) are invited from highly competitive candidates eager to pursue innovative research addressing fundamental questions and developing cutting–edge technologies for application in marine systems.


We are especially interested in applications from high-caliber scientists who take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea and have expertise in development of modelling and integration framework for biological, physical and chemical big data for smart ocean; establishing methods for modelling organismal and systemic networks in the marine whole ecosystem, from microbiomes to large animals and megafauna, and their integration with marine environmental big data.


Besides establishing world-class research program, successful candidate  expected to build a strong teaching program in the Marine Science Program and to develop inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations within the Marine Science Program and the BESE, and across divisions, Research Centers and initiatives at KAUST.

Course Description:


CS-UH 1001 Introduction to Computer Science


Computer Science is an innovative and exciting field that focuses on producing efficient solutions for solving problems in any field. This course introduces students to the foundations of computer science. Students learn how to design algorithms to solve problems and how to translate these algorithms into working computer programs using a high-level programming language. The course covers core programming concepts including basic computation, data structures, decision structures, iterative structures, file input/output, and recursion. Students also learn the elements of Object Oriented Programming (OOP), such as objects, classes, inheritance, abstraction, and polymorphism. A final project allows students to combine these concepts to produce a large program of their design.


Teaching Assistant Duties:


The teaching assistants will assist in preparing and grading assignments, hold weekly recitation sessions and office hours for students, prepare samples of graded student work necessary for course archiving purposes and regularly meet the primary instructor to discuss difficulties faced by the students, grading rubrics etc.


Qualifications

Qualifications


We welcome candidates with a PhD in Computer Science and/or Engineering, Informatics, or related areas, with a strong background in the theory and practice of one or more of : Security/Privacy and/or Dependability/Fault-Tolerance of Distributed Systems and Networks and/or Real-Time and Embedded Systems.


We expect documented experience about systems knowledge of one or more of: cloud/Internet computing and communication; peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructures; blockchain and ledger technology; cyber-physical and Internet-of-Things systems (CPS, IoT); software-defined and/or vehicular networking (SDN, VN); digital health technologies.


We consider as an advantage – all relevant research sub-areas of the above being contemplated – documented research experience in design, verification, and/or evaluation, in the following sub-areas: dependable and/or secure distributed systems and networks; trusted computing and execution environments; threat and intrusion detection/prevention systems; dependable and/or secure distributed blockchain and ledger systems; privacy of biomedical, financial or social data.


Applicants should show exceptional research merit, including strong publication record in top-tier conferences and journals, as well as research projects experience.
