Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Marine Biogeochemistry

Job Description


As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in Marine Science, the Marine Science Program (MarS) in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research, higher education and innovations in the field of Marine Biogeochemistry. Applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) are invited from highly competitive candidates eager to pursue innovative research addressing fundamental questions and developing cutting–edge technologies for application in marine systems.


We are especially interested in applications from high-caliber scientists with expertise in Biogeochemistry and biogeochemical cycles in the ocean water column and sediments with particular reference to the coastal and pelagic environments including shallow and deep extreme environments. Successful candidate is expected to develop top-notch research programs on the biogeochemistry of the Red Sea ecosystems including but not limited to coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests salt marshes (sabkah) and coastal lagoons also in relation to blue carbon sequestration; additional ecosystems are the Red Sea water column and the extreme ecosystems of the Red Sea, such as stromatolites, brine pools and hydrocarbon vents. The selected candidate is  expected to build a strong teaching program in the Marine Science Program and to establish inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations within the Marine Science Program, the BESE Division and across Divisions, Research Centers and Initiatives at KAUST.


Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Biological Science, or related fields, as well as a strong publication record in the top-tier venues of their respective areas. Preference will be given to candidates who can take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea that may serve as a “natural laboratory” for marine biogeochemistry studies in extreme seas, as its present-day conditions (with elevated temperature, salinity and oligotrophy) mirror future conditions in other seas under anticipated climate change scenarios.

The United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a faculty position. Qualified candidates at all levels will be considered at a rank commensurate with academic accomplishments. The Department hosted the inaugural overseas Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination (JSCFE) in November 2013. Appointees will engage in acute care and elective surgical practice, conducted in one, or more, teaching facilities managed by the Health Authorities of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is essential that the candidate holds or eligible to hold a consultant license with the department of health to be able to function on a consultant level. Interest and involvement in research endeavors within the CMHS, which has strong basic sciences, and in collaboration with hospital based clinical colleagues is anticipated. The College operates an integrated/problem-based learning curriculum, the UAE University and other funding bodies provide research opportunities in a new medical school complex.   • Isolates and makes cultures of significant bacteria or other micro-organisms in prescribed or standard inhibitory media and controlling factors, such as moisture, aeration, temperature and nutrition.
  • Identifies micro-organisms via microscopic examination of physiological, morphological and cultural characteristics. Responsible for conducting tests to determine susceptibility of pathogenic microorganisms to sulfa drugs, penicillin and other antibiotics.
  • Prepares and interprets gram stains, acid fast stains, preparations of fungus and parasitology.
  • Responsible for preparing culture media (if required), reagents and stains for various procedures. Responsible for observing material derived from cultures and identifying the type of bacterial colonies found.
  • Performs chemical analyses of substances including, but not limited to, acids, alcohols and enzymes produced by bacteria and other micro-organisms.
  • Maintains and manages the daily quality control records in the Clinical Laboratory Department as related to microbiology.
  • Performs and records routine preventative maintenance and instrument function checks on all microbiology equipment in the Clinical Laboratory Department.
  • Performs Proficiency Testing as required and follows established procedures.

 

Documentation:

  • Responsible for accurately completing records and reports and other statistical information for master files or databases.
  • Follows laboratory policy for data retrieval, record keeping, specimen, and identification, requisition, reporting, charting, and billing procedures. Updates Records and Documents on a daily basis.

 

Communication/Teamwork:

  • Maintains positive working relationship with the medical staff and hospital personnel.
  • Uses positive interpersonal skills to educate/support lab customers and promote success of team members. Uses clear and concise verbal and written communication with staff and the public.
  • Acts independently on supervisor’s direction and accepts responsibility of the adopted policy and procedures of the hospital and the laboratory.
  • Shares call duty and works different shifts as required.
  • Immediately notifies the patient care unit or physician of any critical test results, within 15 mints of the result generation. Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians’ staff, administration and the Administrator of Clinical Laboratory and Pathology.

 

Quality Control/Quality Improvement:

  • To perform and follow quality assurance programs for various laboratory sub departments.
  • Participates in QC/QI for area of specialty and Lab indicators.
  • Does not report patient results unless quality control data are within accepted parameters.
  • Recognizes out of control values, takes corrective action, and notifies others of changes.

 

Safety & Education:

  • Complies with laboratory safety procedures. Possesses adequate knowledge of instrumentation, theory, and application of new and existing tests. Completes education necessary to maintain licensure or certification for the job. Uses and maintains all laboratory equipment correctly. 

 

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking:

  • Assumes responsibility to resolve problems.
  • Performs required preventative maintenance procedures in laboratory instrumentation.
  • Investigates and resolves technical problems, consults supervisor if resolution involves policy or procedure modification. Identifies real or potential situations or equipment failure, attempts to resolve within area of specialty or knowledge and refers complex issues to appropriate source.
  • May be a key analyzer operator with proper training and documentation of skills.
  • Follows the laboratory safety policies and participates in safety education programs. To attend and follow continuous medical training and education program.
  • Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirements
  • Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities 
  • Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
  • Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk assessments, incident reports
  • Comply with Waste management procedures and policies
  • Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems 
 

Qualifications

 

Qualification, Licensure, Education, Experience, Special Skills:

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • At least two (2) years of Medical Laboratory experience.
  • Currently licensed in country of origin and with HAAD license to practice in Abu- Dubai UAE.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, Arabic language is desirable, but not essential.
