Lab in Visual Neuroscience


Visual perception is the primary sense through which we interact with the world.


This course provides the tools to help you probe the neural mechanisms underlying visual perception. You will design, conduct and analyze data in the context of 4 projects, which combine behavioral and neuroimaging techniques. You will gain a working understanding of how visual information is coded and processed in the brain. Furthermore, the course will help you understand differences in visual performance in terms of neural differences.


The course will cover relevant vision science and programming principles throughout the semester. As such, courses such as Computer Programming for Engineers (ENGR-UH 1000), Biopsychology (PSYCH-UH 1003) and Perception (PSYCH-UH 2411) are recommended but not required. By the end of this course, you will be able to design, conduct and analyze data from your own visual neuroscience experiment. You will be able to analyze the data - by writing your own data analysis/model fitting tools if no pre-written tools are available, and critically evaluate your results.

He/she will be coordinating courses and supervise students. The IPH has a thriving graduate teaching program and currently has 23 PhD students and 35 MPH students. Academic rank will be commensurate to qualifications. Furthermore, (s)he should be accomplished in conducting and supervising research projects. Experience with qualitative research methods are essential. It is expected that (s)he will have published their research findings in peer-reviewed international scientific journals. A key requirement for the successful candidate will be their ability to serve as the principal investigator in research projects relevant to public health genomics. Particular skills in developing strong links with other educational establishments, health authorities, hospitals, government agencies and other institutions in the UAE and the wider region will be considered an important qualification. Description


King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched a Smart Health Initiative (SHI) to become a leading institution for development and usage of smart-health technologies and knowledge creation aimed at promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and training programs that will transform health care system in Saudi Arabia and beyond from traditional medicine to precision medicine. One of the key elements to achieve this objective is to build world-class research capability to tackle various technological and scientific challenges related to precision medicine and its implementation in different clinical practices. In this regard, KAUST-SHI is seeking applications from world-class scientists to fill faculty positions at Assistant, Associate and Full Professor levels in Functional Biology in collaboration with the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division. Molecular Mechanisms of Diseases:

Under this program, KAUST SHI and the BESE Division seek world-class experts in the use of Omics technologies and the analysis of data generated. Expertise in diseases such as metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes and metabolic syndrome) cancer, neurologic diseases and multiple sclerosis (MS) will be considered a plus.

Post-Doctoral Researcher - Coral Ecophysiology (NYU Abu Dhabi)

The Burt Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher who will study coral ecophysiology in an extreme environmental setting. NYUAD is located on the shores of the Persian/Arabian Gulf, where corals and other reef fauna experience highly variable and extreme temperatures (ranging from 18 – 36 ?C annually), as well as extreme salinity, frequent hypoxia, high turbidity, and recurrent bleaching. The UAE is also bordered on its east coast by the environmentally benign Gulf of Oman, making this location an ideal setting for studying how marine organisms cope with and respond to extreme environmental conditions, and the insights this may provide in our rapidly changing world.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will conduct novel laboratory (aquarium) and/or field experiments to advance scientific knowledge in this field and develop our understanding of the biology of corals in the Gulf. Candidates with strong backgrounds in molecular ecology, including application of various -omics based approaches, are desirable, and/or candidates with strong backgrounds in coral physiology, particularly around heterotrophy. The candidate will have wide latitude to develop research projects in areas of their particular strengths and interests, and will be provided an annual research budget. The position is intended to start in April/May 2022, although this is flexible depending on the candidate’s situation.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will integrate into the existing lab of PI John Burt, which includes post-doc’s and other research staff from the

NYUAD Marine Biology Lab, the NYUAD Water Research Center, and the NYUAD Center for Genomics and Systems Biology; they will later be joined by two additional post-docs from the recently established NYUAD Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences. They will join a diverse team of researchers that come from across the world, with projects spanning various coastal and marine ecosystems.

To be successful in this role you MUST possess the following to be considered:

  • PhD in Biology, Marine Biology or equivalent from an accredited college or
  • A strong publication record with first-author experience
  • Dive certification from an accredited agency (PADI, BSAC, or similar organization), with >50 dives experience
  • Valid Driver’s License in the home country
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with external stakeholders, employees, management, and students.

 

Previous experience in the following is desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in multi-omics approaches to address ecological questions OR

Accountable for design and delivery of audit processes and reporting through local operational teams or external bodies.  Responsible for customer feedback processes and dissemination of key messages of all aspects of brand performance. The primary contact for Host Brands on Quality Assurance, product quality and Brand Assurance, as well as cooperative work with Brand Managers, Other Quality Assurance Managers, Purchasing and Product Development.

The below Key Performance Areas include but are not limited to:

  • Lead Quality and Safety Assurance activities necessary to achieve business objectives in the restaurants.
  • Develop quality management systems including HACCP and its prerequisite programs for stores.
  • Devise and manage the audit a process that ensures all products are received, stored and distributed in compliance with Host Brands, local market regulations and HACCP.
  • Interpret audit information and develop new restaurant processes as appropriate in order to improve performance.
  • Ensure that all appropriate measures to protect Brand safety and reputation are in place.
  • Maintain and improve the Quality Management System including HACCP and related procedures.
  • Accountable for QA KPI’s design and delivery.
  • Provide functional expertise and execute functional responsibilities.
  • Manage critical incident and product recall processes including leadership of crisis management.
  • Devise and provide training programmes for store partners in quality matters.
  • Identify gaps in quality and practical ways to bridge and eliminate those gaps.
  • Identify business critical information, make recommendations, communicate and facilitate solutions.
  • Devise a programme for internal store audits ensuring strict compliance with departments and Host Brands operating principles, procedures and standards.
  • Give feedback to management, facilities and operation teams regarding all relevant quality issues, hygienic store design to meet health regulations.
  • Report Quality performance trends to the Management team as well as to stores including major issues which could affect business performance.
  • Monitor and understand the Customer, market trends and competitor activity that should be adopted in order to gain competitive advantage.
  • Contribute to all aspects of process improvement through identification of equipment or process changes. 
  • Research and develop process improvements through feedback from the restaurants and support centres.
     

Knowledge:

  • B.S Degree in Food Science or Food Microbiology with 10 years of QA Managerial food experience.
  • HACCP knowledge & application is a must.
Experience:
  • Experienced in food manufacturing or restaurants.
  • Extensive audit experience (preferred)
  • Familiar with best practice of food safety management.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Operations.
  • Project Management.

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Marine Biogeochemistry

As part of a major initiative to strengthen its research in Marine Science, the Marine Science Program (MarS) in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at KAUST is seeking to expand research, higher education and innovations in the field of Marine Biogeochemistry. Applications for a faculty position (Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) are invited from highly competitive candidates eager to pursue innovative research addressing fundamental questions and developing cutting–edge technologies for application in marine systems.


We are especially interested in applications from high-caliber scientists with expertise in Biogeochemistry and biogeochemical cycles in the ocean water column and sediments with particular reference to the coastal and pelagic environments including shallow and deep extreme environments. Successful candidate is expected to develop top-notch research programs on the biogeochemistry of the Red Sea ecosystems including but not limited to coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests salt marshes (sabkah) and coastal lagoons also in relation to blue carbon sequestration; additional ecosystems are the Red Sea water column and the extreme ecosystems of the Red Sea, such as stromatolites, brine pools and hydrocarbon vents. The selected candidate is  expected to build a strong teaching program in the Marine Science Program and to establish inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations within the Marine Science Program, the BESE Division and across Divisions, Research Centers and Initiatives at KAUST.


Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Biological Science, or related fields, as well as a strong publication record in the top-tier venues of their respective areas. Preference will be given to candidates who can take advantage of KAUST’s unique access to the Red Sea that may serve as a “natural laboratory” for marine biogeochemistry studies in extreme seas, as its present-day conditions (with elevated temperature, salinity and oligotrophy) mirror future conditions in other seas under anticipated climate change scenarios.
