Cetacean Research Assistant

We are seeking a Research Assistant to support conducting a cetacean marine survey project in Dubai waters. The project aims to gather information on the three most common small cetacean species occurring in UAE waters (finless porpoise, humpback and bottlenose dolphins) utilising boat based surveys and Photo-identification methodologies.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for planning, administration of and conducting the activities of the boat-based cetacean survey. The role requires strong organisation and communication skills, an attention to detail, ability to work independently in a meticulous and reliable manner, ability to work well with colleagues in both research and cooperative living situations and good proficiency in oral and written English.

The ideal candidate will have: a background in biology or environmental science (or related fields, BSc or higher required), experience conducting field work (preferably in the marine environment), strong interest in the marine environment and conservation, desire to pursue a career in marine sciences, good verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.

This is a part-time paid position (approximately 3 days per week possibly including some weekends) for 10-12 months. It does not cover UAE residency visa, accommodation or health insurance. The position will be based in Dubai UAE starting asap.

This project is run through Zayed University and supported by the UAE Dolphin Project Initiative and Atlantis the Palm Dubai.


1) Organising the field based work:

- Organising and Maintaining equipment

Clean all the equipment after every survey

Ensure functionality

Checking/ sorting batteries

Data collection forms

- Organising logistics

Booking boat

Organising necessary navigation permits

- Organising team personnel

Maintaining contact with volunteers,

Ensure collection of volunteer data (contacts/ liability waivers forms)

Organising shifts for the surveys

2) Conducting boat based survey

- Collecting scientific data (survey data/ Photo-Identification data)

- Leading the data recording (database management)

- Managing the volunteers in the field

3) Support data analysis

- Support the PI in data analysis

- Prepare presentation

- Report writing
